Frankie lands medal at last
A proud pensioner has received recognition for the work she did feeding a wartime nation 60 years after she worked the fields.
Frankie Cordwell has finally been awarded a badge for her role as one of the Women's Land Army in the Second World War.
The 79-year-old was one of about 80,000 young women who worked in every aspect of agriculture so the men could go off to fight.
Mrs Cordwell, of Greenford Avenue, Hanwell, said: "We did everything - threshing corn, milking, sheep shearing, you name it, we had to do it.
"I did it for about three and a half years, based at Yapton in Sussex."
Plans for badges were announced in December and Mrs Cordwell, who works as an administrator for Impact Coaches in Leighton Road, West Ealing, received hers about a week ago.
She added: "It's a shame we had to wait so long as many of us are no longer around now."
