The body of a man was discovered floating in the Grand Union Canal this afternoon.
Police were called just after midday after passers-by spotted the dead man in the water behind Elthorne Park playing field near Osterley Lock.
Mez Roth who was working on a property in Southdown Avenue, Hanwell, said he saw police car after police car parking up and heading down to the canal.
The 48-year-old said: "There were loads of police cars and ambulances and they came down quietly without the sirens.
"They were trying to break into a gate by the Evershed Sports Hall and I just couldn't believe how many officers there were.
"It made me think it must be something pretty terrible that had happened."
The white man, believed to be in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene at around 1:30pm on Tuesday, March 3.
Police are investigating and post mortem will take place in due course.
