Ealing school takes up exercise challenge

Children were surprised to see their on-screen exercise heroine on their school stage to give them a demonstration of her new DVD programme.

'Leaping Liz' who runs the 'Physikidz' aerobics programme for children, visited St John's Primary School in Felix Road, West Ealing, last week to give the 300 children a taste of her latest classroom-based fitness regime.

Over the last three years, the school has been using the DVDs as a form of 'brain gym', or quick bursts of exercise in the classroom when children's concentration needs a boost.

Janeen Quentin, the P.E co-ordinator, said the five to 10 minute exercises help contribute to the statutory recommendations for PE during the week and the children really enjoy the change in routine.

Mrs Quentin, said: "Leaping Liz, aka Liz Hindley, came in to do the exercises and the children didn't know she was coming.

"They loved every minute of it and it's amazing to see how much more energetic and engaged the children are after doing the exercise and before starting their work.

"Liz had a theme of superheroes and so children were told to stretch out the arms in the sky like Superman which really appealed to them.

"They're all exercises that can be done by moving from the chair to the space beside their desk and so it's not necessary to have a large space."
