Hanwell students interview Tim Westwood for BBC news
Lucky Hanwell students got to work with a BBC presenter and interviewed Radio One DJ Tim Westwood as part of a news programme to be broadcast next week.
Over the past few months, the pupils of Elthorne Park High School in Westlea Road, have been training to be top journalists, carrying out interviews and producing reports and next week, they will see all their hard work streamed to the nation.
The year eight, nine and 10 pupils took part in the BBC News School Report, a project designed to engage 11-14-year-olds in the news and Huw Edwards took the class at Ealing City Learning Centre helping the youngsters to collect, write and broadcast the news stories.
Next Thursday, a total of 700 schools will be making the news together and Mr Edwards, a former teacher, said: "I'm involved because I want to give young people the chance to make the news themselves, and I want to share the principles of good journalism."
Loyd Hall, 12, said: "It was really useful to get help from someone who broadcasts news as his job.
"He was friendly and explained things clearly and answered all our behind the scenes questions about the Ten O'Clock news too."
Ms Wells, project co-ordinator at EPHS praised all the students involved and said: "It was a real team effort with help from members of staff and parents too.
"The students worked very hard and excelled under a great deal of pressure."
On Thursday March 11 at 2pm, the students will be broadcasting their news, covering the stories of the day as well as their special reports on West London and the Olympics, climate change and the influence of hip hop music including an interview with Radio One's Tim Westwood.
